L’Install Party Spring a eu lieu dans nos locaux, au lendemain de la soirée anniversaire des 10 ans de Mandriva, à la Tour Eiffel. Une soixantaine de participants s’étaient inscrits sur notre Wiki pour l’évènement. Ils étaient encadrés par nos ingénieurs et développeurs qui les ont aidés à installer la Mandriva One 2008 Spring et leur faire découvrir les nouveautés. La fin de journée s’est poursuivie par un pique nique, qui finalement s’est déroulé dans nos locaux car le temps n’était pas avec nous et la soirée a continué avec des parties de StepMania très tard dans la nuit.

Cette première Install Party s’est très bien déroulée et les participants ont apprécié de voir l’envers du décor de Mandriva.
Deux semaines plus tard, d’autres évènement du même type ont eu lieu en France mais également dans le monde entier. Nous avons eu quelques retours d’organisateurs enthousiastes. La majorité a trouvé l’installation simple et les goodies ont été fortement appréciés.

Fin juin, Mandriva a accueilli dans ses locaux une équipe de l’émission : Capital, qui voulait réaliser un reportage sur les NetBooks, ainsi que sur l’univers de l’Open Source. La diffusion de l’émission aurait lieu début septembre (date que nous vous confirmerons), ce qui correspondrait à la sortie du dernier produit de la société Dexxon : le Gdium fonctionnant sur une version de Mandriva Linux. C’est donc, tout naturellement, que nous avons fait appel à notre partenaire pour présenter ce produit.

First KDE-Edu Meeting hosted by Mandriva, Paris
The first KDE-Edu meeting, on the 1st& 2nd December 2007, aimed at polishing educational applications for the KDE 4.0 release and to start planning KDE 4.1. Debugging, testing, exchanging ideas, shaping libraries, getting to know everyone was the main focus of the meeting.

KDE-Edu était à Paris dans les locaux de Mandriva pour la préparation de KDE 4.1
Les développeurs de KDE-Edu se réunissaient pour la première fois les 1er et 2 Décembre 2007 dans les locaux de Mandriva à Paris. L’objectif principal de cette rencontre était la finalisation des logiciels pour la sortie de KDE 4.0 et la préparation de KDE 4.1.Cette réunion a rassemblé 14 personnes dont 2 Français, un Américain, un Brésilien, des Allemands, des Russes, des Espagnols, un Slovène et un Écossais. Elle a permis aux développeurs des logiciels éducatifs de KDE de renforcer l’esprit d’équipe.
Le projet KDE-Edu a été fondé en 2001 avec l’idée de rassembler les logiciels existants dans un module KDE pour les intégrer complètement à KDE. Le module kdeedu est sorti pour la première fois avec KDE 3.0 en avril 2002.
La réunion a permis de corriger de nombreux bugs pour la sortie de KDE-Edu dans KDE 4. Les développeurs ont aussi étudié l’utilisation des bibliothèques communes comme Eigen2, une bibliothèque de mathématiques. Son développeur a étudié avec les personnes intéressées les besoins non couverts actuellement par cette bibliothèque.
Divers sous-groupes se sont formés au cours du week-end afin de définir le travail des prochains mois. Les logiciels KDE-Edu sur la plate-forme Windows ont également été présentés. Une telle réunion redonne une nouvelle motivation aux développeurs et permet un travail intensif pendant deux jours.

For those of you who are impatient to get started with Mandriva Linux 2008, good news: the Free and Powerpack ISOs are finalized and are being made available to the early seeders program right now. We need a few days for the early seeders to get downloaded and set up to seed, so the official public release will happen at the start of next week. Watch this space! The One ISO is taking a little longer to complete, but will be available for the official release at the same time as the others.

Pour ceux d’entre vous impatients de plonger dans l’univers de Mandriva Linux 2008, voici de bonne nouvelles : la Free et la Powerpack sont terminées ; en effet les ISOs sont validées et mises à disposition pour le programme “early seeders”. Il suffit de quelques jours pour que les “seeders” téléchargent les ISOs et soient prêts à commencer la diffusion, l’ouverture des téléchargements publiques se fera donc en début de semaine. Surveillez le blog pour en être informés ! La One nécessite encore quelques tests afin d’obtenir sa validation finale mais sera disponible en même temps que les autres ISOs, lors de l’annonce officielle de Mandriva Linux 2008.
So it seems Lenovo is running a Linux distribution poll to gauge interest in the various distributions, as a possible precursor to pre-loading one on some of their systems. Mandriva is doing pretty well at the moment, despite being a write-in. We’d love to end up in a strong position in the top group of distributions.
Mandriva recently completed its participation in the KDE aKademy 2007 conference, sponsoring the event, presenting various technologies, and providing Mandriva Flash keys to developers attending the conference. Today Mandriva announces a similar program for the GNOME conference, GUADEC 2007, which is taking place in Birmingham from July 15th to July 21st. Again, as well as sponsoring the conference, Mandriva is arranging to provide special edition Mandriva Flash USB keys to developers attending the conference as a token of appreciation for their work.
“The GUADEC organisation wanted to make a bold move and remove the use of paper for promotional materials as much as possible,” said Bastien Nocera, a member of the GUADEC 2007 organization committee. “Thanks to Mandriva, GUADEC sponsors have been able to offer videos, code and application demonstrations on the USB key,” he continued. “We hope to have set a standard in social responsibility by cutting detritus, and hope Mandriva and other conferences will continue this work in the future.”
GUADEC is the official annual meeting of the GNOME community, where GNOME developers and users come together for presentations, talks, and workshop sessions. Mandriva is proud to help in supporting this vital and significant event. Mandriva’s involvement in GUADEC will run beyond sponsorship: several Mandriva staff members will be present to improve communication between the Mandriva and GNOME communities and to continue to improve the integration of GNOME and Mandriva. Mandriva’s lead GNOME developer, Frederic Crozat, is also an active participant in the GNOME development community and will be at GUADEC to continue his work on various aspects of the GNOME project.
Mandriva Flash, the Linux key, is a complete Mandriva Linux desktop on a bootable USB key. Mandriva Flash is designed to allow the user to take their desktop and all their vital documents with them wherever they go. The Mandriva Flash provided to GUADEC participants will be a special edition based on Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring and including the very latest version of GNOME, 2.18.
“We are very proud to be in a position to support this important event and to give something back to the GNOME community,” said David Barth, Mandriva Vice-President of Engineering. “Our staff and contributors are looking forward both to spreading the word about Mandriva and being involved in important work on the future of GNOME.”
