Countdown for Mandriva 2011 started!

As you know, we plan to release Mandriva 2011 at 29 Aug. Since announce about RC2 our development team made a lot of significant changes in distribution. I will explain them day by day.

Guilherme Moro, Alexander Kurtakov and David Walluck made huge job and updated java stack in Mandriva. This titanic job affected more than 1000 packages in repository. Actually, the update is not completed, but when it done, Mandriva will have better cross-distro stack.

Mandriva Directory Server 2.4.1 now available

Mandriva announces the immediate availability of a new release of the Mandriva Directory Server (MDS), an easy to use, powerful and secure solution for managing identities, directory services and network services within the enterprise.

This release features in particular the following enhancements:
- the mail module now supports the management of Zarafa accounts;
- the Samba module features extended fine-grained access control list management on Samba shares, and advanced configuration of the Samba accounts;
- the network module supports new DHCP options.

In addition, the MDS build system has been migrated to autotools, which eases manual install and packaging. The MDS packages are available for Mandriva Enterprise Server, Mandriva Desktop, Debian, Redhat (and more) with a user interface in the following languages: English, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German and Spanish.

This new version of MDS is a step forward in simplifying the administration of IT systems and in reducing the related costs while increasing the reliability, the security and the evolutivity of the managed services. Combined with Mandriva Enterprise Server and with Pulse2, it provides a powerful stack for managing the IT assets of enterprises of all sizes. The MDS is interoperable with MS Windows, Linux and Mac systems and it provides a rich and documented API for a smooth integration into existing systems.

Mandriva is at your disposal for providing professional services around the Mandriva Directory Server.

Mandriva 2011 RC2 is out!

(Posting on behalf of Denis Koryavov from ROSA Labs, who will be responsible for Mandriva Linux desktop distribution development from now on. Please welcome him in this role!).

Yesterday we went back to work on properly configured environment and as we promised, today Mandriva & ROSA team proudly announce that Mandriva 2011 RC2 is available for download.

In this release candidate we fixed more than 300 bugs and added or changed about 700 packages.

If you need more detailed information, OK, here are main changes since RC1:
- We added virtualbox guest additions by default. Now testing in VirtualBox gives more pleasure than ever.
- Minor fixes in programs for configuring pptp/vpn/wi-fi. Lets try to connect from outside!
- More network cards from Atheros&Intel are supported now.
- Restored some old and added some new epson/hp/lexmark printer drivers.
- Now USB 3G are supported much better. Some of us are working now without wires, so why you can’t?
- We are working hard to improve KDM and Dolphin. Now they work much better.
- Also, our hands added big chunk of code to SimpleWelcome, TimeFrame and RocketBar.
- Improver, Sphere and Sync work like a charm. OK, almost like a charm, but they work!
- ATI and NVidia proprietary drivers have been removed from the installation image. They don’t want to work properly with coool graphics effects. Anyway, you can install these drivers from the repository.
- Made final freeze of 2011 platform in build system. This news is for maintainers only. Thanks for good work, guys!
- We started working on Mandriva 2011 Long Term Support release. Currently we plan to release LTS version by the end of the year. Seriously!
- We started transferring some packages from PLF repository to the «main». Less actions in post install time are better, aren’t they?

Enough? We hope that not! Ok, the visual improvements are coming:
- We added new cursor theme. Now you can point to something so easily …
- We added new icons. Your eyes says thanks for this. We promise not to give up to add new icons in future.
- Also we added new wallpapers. Everybody can take some relax.

Please help us to make Mandriva 2011 better. No more release candidates:
next step is final release!

But because this is just release candidate, here is list of known bugs:
- It takes long start for live-mode
- You can see error message on impossibility to find file user-places.xbel
- Installer shows an error on reading data on flash at installation from it
- Some errors in testing network settings in the installer
- Non-optimal settings for the fonts and the Dolphin file manager
- ROSA Cursors are not used by default
- Graphics effects are turned off by default
- We miss  kernel options for clean start
- Nepomuk&psync status is under heavy development, so some errors exist
- Low volume by default, because some of us like coding at night :)
- Flash plugin in x64 mode consumes too much memory
- There are issues with some USB webcams

We fix them all as soon as possible. Try to update your RC2 copy on next week!
Again, no more release candidates: next step is final release!

You can download Mandriva Desktop 2011 RC2 from your favorite mirror, for example: http://mirror.yandex.ru/mandriva/devel/iso/2011/ (torrents are available from here http://torrent.mandriva.com/public/)  and commit bugs in our bugzilla (qa.mandriva.com).

Mandriva 2011 RC2 is coming …

As you know, today is a big day. We release next release candidate of our distro. Or i mean, we plan to release today. Because here, in Moscow, the weather is so hot and as not all of our developers come from Brazil where such weather is usual, some of our team is overheated. But happily, in Brazil is winter and we move as fast as possible to this country for releasing new version.
As airplane not so fast as we want, we can grant access tomorrow …

We start collecting wishes for new build system

As you know, release of Mandriva 2011 is coming. After that our developers continue to upgrade and polish mandriva build system. We receive many requests from community, that new build system must have new features. So, for example, new policy to add/upgrage packets, new functionality to create own “spins”/distributions or just for building existing package but with other defaults, etc.

So we have some questions:
- what you need from new build service? should it be like opensuse build server or enough simply utility like in fedora to create own iso “from scratch”. Or may be something else?
- what service should be created first?

Give us your opinion and we make good service

Mandriva, at the heart of the CompatibleOne project.

The realm of remote, scalable and automated computing, also known as Cloud Computing, is currently progressing at a very fast pace.

CompatibleOne is a research project, under the aegis of the two competitiveness clusters System@tic and SCS, aiming at facilitating the deployment, the configuration and the administration of public, private or hybrid Clouds using open standards and interoperable open-source technologies.

As any other infrastructure technology, Cloud Computing carries a lock-in risk for the customers. The purpose of CompatibleOne is to avoid this pitfall by improving the interoperability of all involved technologies. Far from harming suppliers, this will reassure customers and accelerate the adoption of Cloud Computing within the enterprise.

In order to achieve this goal, CompatibleOne is defining application programming interfaces (APIs) and integrated solutions that will support in particular the instantiation, the configuration, the monitoring and the billing of Cloud resources, while also enabling the implementation of QoS strategies and energy consumption optimization.

In partnership with others participants, both industrial and academical, Mandriva R&D team is working on the creation of innovative services in the following areas:
- Interoperability of virtualization technologies,
- Modeling of infrastructure resources and interoperability of resource management solutions,
- Management of virtual networks.

As a concrete example of the use of the designed technologies, Mandriva Pulse2, a management solution for heterogeneous IT parks, will see its functionalities extended to on-demand virtual infrastructure management in order to support the allocation, configuration and management of virtual machines.
