Mandriva 2011 RC2 is out!

(Posting on behalf of Denis Koryavov from ROSA Labs, who will be responsible for Mandriva Linux desktop distribution development from now on. Please welcome him in this role!).

Yesterday we went back to work on properly configured environment and as we promised, today Mandriva & ROSA team proudly announce that Mandriva 2011 RC2 is available for download.

In this release candidate we fixed more than 300 bugs and added or changed about 700 packages.

If you need more detailed information, OK, here are main changes since RC1:
- We added virtualbox guest additions by default. Now testing in VirtualBox gives more pleasure than ever.
- Minor fixes in programs for configuring pptp/vpn/wi-fi. Lets try to connect from outside!
- More network cards from Atheros&Intel are supported now.
- Restored some old and added some new epson/hp/lexmark printer drivers.
- Now USB 3G are supported much better. Some of us are working now without wires, so why you can’t?
- We are working hard to improve KDM and Dolphin. Now they work much better.
- Also, our hands added big chunk of code to SimpleWelcome, TimeFrame and RocketBar.
- Improver, Sphere and Sync work like a charm. OK, almost like a charm, but they work!
- ATI and NVidia proprietary drivers have been removed from the installation image. They don’t want to work properly with coool graphics effects. Anyway, you can install these drivers from the repository.
- Made final freeze of 2011 platform in build system. This news is for maintainers only. Thanks for good work, guys!
- We started working on Mandriva 2011 Long Term Support release. Currently we plan to release LTS version by the end of the year. Seriously!
- We started transferring some packages from PLF repository to the «main». Less actions in post install time are better, aren’t they?

Enough? We hope that not! Ok, the visual improvements are coming:
- We added new cursor theme. Now you can point to something so easily …
- We added new icons. Your eyes says thanks for this. We promise not to give up to add new icons in future.
- Also we added new wallpapers. Everybody can take some relax.

Please help us to make Mandriva 2011 better. No more release candidates:
next step is final release!

But because this is just release candidate, here is list of known bugs:
- It takes long start for live-mode
- You can see error message on impossibility to find file user-places.xbel
- Installer shows an error on reading data on flash at installation from it
- Some errors in testing network settings in the installer
- Non-optimal settings for the fonts and the Dolphin file manager
- ROSA Cursors are not used by default
- Graphics effects are turned off by default
- We miss  kernel options for clean start
- Nepomuk&psync status is under heavy development, so some errors exist
- Low volume by default, because some of us like coding at night :)
- Flash plugin in x64 mode consumes too much memory
- There are issues with some USB webcams

We fix them all as soon as possible. Try to update your RC2 copy on next week!
Again, no more release candidates: next step is final release!

You can download Mandriva Desktop 2011 RC2 from your favorite mirror, for example: http://mirror.yandex.ru/mandriva/devel/iso/2011/ (torrents are available from here http://torrent.mandriva.com/public/)  and commit bugs in our bugzilla (qa.mandriva.com).

And just a few words from myself. As you all already know, this is my last week at Mandriva/Conectiva. It was enormous pleasure for me to have the opportunity to work within this community and being responsible for some of the Mandriva releases, applications and news.

I’d like to wish Denis Koryavov – and to all the Mandriva, Conectiva and ROSA teams – best of luck with future releases! They are doing a great job in changing the shape of Linux Desktops, and I am certain that they will have success in this task.

See you around in the open-source communities, and may the source be with you!

    Eugeni

Так или иначе, спасибо, Евгений, за вашу работу над дистрибутивом. Будем надеяться, последователи не подкачают.

  2. What about hybrid graphics support ? now mostly all new icore* laptops come with these kind of graphics and with rc1 was impossible to switch to the non-intel card, leaving aside all the crashes with the intel card. Bug report:

    https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=63394

  3. tabris says:

    nice :D

  4. nhanth87 says:

I’m trying RC2 now, disable nepomuk as default make my computer run faster. Rosa menu is better and faster, I try it 10 times, not crash or freeze.
RC2 look like very good, so I will remove mageia and comback to mandriva now. :)

  5. Алексей says:

Курсоры ROSA – это замечательно, но уже вышли kernel 3.0 и KDE 4.7. Когда планируется?

    • Ядро 3.0 планируется к LTS-релизу, KDE 4.7 не планируется.

Kernel 3.0 is planned to include until LTS-release, KDE 4.7 isn’t in plans.

      • topo says:

Тогда уж надо ждать ядра 3.0.1, так как, согласно Википедии, в “три ровно” ничего кроме первой цифры не изменилось, это лишь PR-ход. Ждём ядра “за” три.

        • topo says:

Then I shall have to wait for kernel 3.0.1, since, according to Wikipedia, “the three exactly” nothing but the first digit is not changed, it’s just PR-move. We look forward to the core “for” three.
          Sorry for translater.

Please do not post comments in Russian or french language , this is English blog.
You can translate and post in English.

    thanks

    • Hans Micheelsen says:

To my knowledge this is an international media. I’ve never seen any indications that only English is allowed.
      It’s practical, not compulsive

      • raja says:

yes, i agree, but it would be better to keep one language per page (russian in russian page, french in french page and so on :)

  7. Clodoaldo says:

I downloaded and I’m gonna try it. I hope a better interface.

  8. ferri says:

  11. Omega Adrek says:

there is a way to return the Look of Dolphin of 2010.2 or before 2011 cause the new one i dont like so much :/

    • What is not enough to you in the new Dolphin?

      • eco2geek says:

Tell us how to re-enable the main menu, please.

      • Omega Adrek says:

the main menu is very useful also all the buttons that the old Dolphin had on 2010.2 like split view very very useful to Copy & Paste on a Folder or move it too. the rest is okay i like it a lot as the new ROSA Panel very useful works like DockBarX but without Zeitgeist and other things i had installed DockBarX on Mandriva it took 3 months to me make it work on Avant Window Navigator on KDE not GNOME

  12. eco2geek says:

Unity-like application launcher (look at those big icons!)… no menu toolbar in Dolphin… Elementary icons… Hey! You got Ubuntu in my Mandriva!

  13. kuntal says:

waiting eagerly for mdv2011 stable :D

  14. kuntal says:

I don’t like dolphin. I think konquerer is way better than dolphin.

  15. Daniel says:

    Strange my md5sum doesn’t match:

    $ cat Mandriva.2011.RC2.x86_64.2.iso.md5sum; md5sum Mandriva.2011.RC2.x86_64.2.iso

  16. Daniel says:

Problem solved, downloading the iso a second time worked:

    $ cat Mandriva.2011.RC2.x86_64.2.iso.md5sum; md5sum Mandriva.2011.RC2.x86_64.2.iso
    b504d55ab92a5b55ed0926b23ff31287 Mandriva.2011.RC2.x86_64.2.iso

  17. AEC says:

Not available packages below, which allow to use my wireless with any kernel, then I could not test on my wireless MDV2011 RC2:

    dkms-r8192se – dkms package for r8192se driver
    rtl8192se-firmware – firmware package for r8192se driver

  18. Henrik says:

So when can we expect the final release?

  19. ferri says:

    This time I mentioned:
    - Anything of dvd instalation is impossible unistall but I added repos.
    - ROSA starter shows default stone icon next user name but I set up other icon during instal.

    • ferri says:

      urpme is working.
Uninstall via rpmdrake does not work.
      I obtained this reply:
However this package is not in the package list.
You may want to update your urpmi database.

With packages which I added after installation, I do not have any problems.

  20. problems with konqueror-flash does not work
    google earth is not installed
not install google earth system is not good

  21. Paul Stift - Vung Tau Vietnam says:

Thanks Mandriva, you did a great job. After install Mandriva is running smooth. Some applications could not be installed, missing files. But this will be solved with the final release. I will use the Rosa dektop on my netbook. On my desktop computer I prefer KDE. I think this release is the best distro at the moment. And I am waiting for the moment when you can buy a computer with pre-installed Mandriva in any computer shop.

  22. AEC says:

In mandriva 2011 there will be a stable kernel-desktop NRJ and PAE?

kernel-nrj-pae-desktop > exclusively for 32bit (NOT 64!), when you have more than 3 Gb ram (upto 64Gb)???

  23. Downloaded and installed….it looks great and feels great…looks very very professional….KDE is simply amazing here…it is very responsive and fast…

KDE 4.7 Has been released…which is much faster than the 4.6x series and it has many new great features…! Is there any chance that the final version would use KDE 4.7 or will it ship with the 4.6.5…or will the 4.7 be delivered as an update!

    Great work…Thanx!

  24. motitos says:

    I’ve tried the RC2 in my wife’2 laptop. Here’s a quick review:

The install process went smooth this time.

Good choice of software. Including the printing software is a wise option. However, bearing in mind that all current laptops have a webcam (at least in Spain), please include cheese in the final version. I don’t think that the average user will ever use krfb or krdc. If you include 30 languages in kde, you should also include the languages for firefox. Last but not least, korganizer is missing.

The colors in the grub image are not suitable. Sorry, but there is not contrast enough. You can either change the font color or to change the background color, but the current combination makes it difficult to read.

After one day of use, I can say: good job!

    • motitos,

What language for Firefox we missed to include in RC2? We have KOrganizer in the repositories.

      > The colors in the grub image are not suitable

      We’ll change them.

      • motitos says:

I had to install firefox-es via urpmi after install, as well as korganizer. I know korganizer is in the repos, but for me it is so useful that I would add it by default. But of course, it is just a suggestion. And thanx a million for listening!

  25. Antonio says:

Downloaded the iso yesterday. Unfortunately, with 1GB RAM Live mode is stuill unusable and extremely slow. Also cannot run a fresh installa on Virtualbox; the system requires at least 768MB of RAM, with 512 MB assigned installation faisl at the end.
Pls provide a note with minimum system requirements.
    Thanks

    • Actually it works with 512 MB RAM, but requires SWAP file (at least 150 MB).

      • Jose says:

I`ve been trying Rc2 version and everything works well except my dvd/cdrom unit.
When I press the open button, it starts opening but it suddenly closes quickly.
It is impossible to insert a cd or dvd in the unit.
With mandriva 2010.2 it works fine.
I don´t understand why something that worked in a previous release worked fine in a
release thet is supposed to be better stops working

In the rc1 , the same problem

  26. musuoka says:

For the current way of life, I am still waiting to see, I seem to not know what to do to fill their empty minds already, as if this world did nothing to attract my attention. I was confused in the stagnant, I am waiting for a miracle.

  27. Alex says:

“- ATI and NVidia proprietary drivers have been removed from the installation image. They don’t want to work properly with coool graphics effects. Anyway, you can install these drivers from the repository.”

As a result, I cannot pass “the white screen of death” the same as SUSE.

Thank you, and all the best to you Eugeni!

  28. jtr says:

Well, great choice for KDE 4, but why oh why not using this ugly shotwell in spite of digikam (KDE photo management) ? And why Pitivi in spite of KDEnlive ? These software don’t seems homogenous with other, they don’t even use the KDE file selector :(

  29. meequz says:

    >ATI and NVidia proprietary drivers have been removed from the installation image. They don’t want to work properly with coool graphics effects. Anyway, you can install these drivers from the repository.<

Well, I installed it, but how can I switching between open and proprietary video drivers after it? It would be very useful if the simple switching was into the Mandriva Control Center.
    Thanks.
    _______________________________
Хорошо, я установил его, но как мне после этого переключаться между открытым и проприетарным видеодрайверами? Было бы удобно, если бы через Центр управления Mandriva можно было между ними переключаться в пару кликов мыши.
    Спасибо.

  30. Clodoaldo says:

I can’t access the internet with my modem 3G Claro operator in Mandriva 2011 RC 2. Help me!!!

  31. ferri says:

Are there any updates available this time for Mandriva 2011 RC 2 yet?
I added repos via MCC and it gives me none.
    So I don’t know.

  32. Edilson says:

Gprs 3g usb modem manufactured by Huawei E226 model is not recognized by the system.

  33. jose says:

My cd-rom/DVD unit does`t work with Mandriva 2011 RC 2.
I`ve been using mandriva 2010.1 with kde desktop and everything works fine.
With Mandriva 2011 Rc1 and Rc2, when I push open button in my cd-rom unit It starts opennig and then suddenly it closes quickly, I can,t insert a disk in the unit.
My cdrom unit is a LG
I hope this problem will be solved in the final release because i would like to get on using Mandriva

  34. Jack says:

    hmmm… … KDE 4.7 will be in ???

  35. kyndek says:

Excellent job. Thanks to all who made this unique distro. But there is an issue with usb devices sound (still in RC2). I described it here: https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=63560. Is there still a chance to fix it in the final release?

  36. How can I remove all the extra languages I don really use, nor I need?
There is NO means to eliminate all the unused language packages.
even firebox, includes lots of languages, ALL I need is (EN) and (ES)
I do not speak, nor read any of the rest :) .

Thanks for any tips to solve this.

RC2 is… Looking really nice! Good work.

    • bedi says:

I think you can do it via rpmdrake (the install/remover application from menu), search for ‘l18n’ and check for remove.

  37. jose says:

will the new application manager be included in the final release ?

    It looks nice

  38. zsolti says:

I installed also Mandriva 2011 Rc2 KDE version and i have positive and negative impressions too.
    Positive:
Very nice, very beautiful graphical interface.
I like the new “Start menu”
You get all the everyday used software installed
    Negative:
    Too slow
The OS/SW refresh does not work
I cannot install ati proprietary driver
There is a very few documentation where you can find “how to do” documentation
The HW usage is very big (like for Win 7 or even higher).

Could anybody help me with some solutions from the negative things?
    Thanks!

I think that it’s better to make some more RC and put KDE 4.7 !

  41. Tony Green says:

Apologies if this is a stupid question that’s been answered somewhere I haven’t looked, but how do I set up repositories to install this as system update rather than downloading the ISO? I’d like to give the release candidate a try (especially as it’s got a kernel update that I think should solve some problems I’ve got) but I don’t want to do it as a clean install and lose all of my current setup.
