And now, our first RC of Mandriva 2011 is at your reach!

Hi folks,

as told yesterday, Mandriva 2011 RC1 images were waiting just the final testing and retouches to become available. And now I am glad to tell you that they should be already available on your favorite mirror!

Please forgive us for the delay, but we believe that it would be better to take some additional hours (or, in this case, almost an entire day) to carry out the final tests, certify that everything works as good as we can polish it for a RC-release quality, and improve some things which we don’t like (such as some misplaced fonts, some low-res images, and some small issues with dkms pre-compiled drivers – yes, full UI integration is never easy). In return, I believe that we are giving you now a much more tested glimpse of what Mandriva 2011 will look like.

So, grab the iso from your favorite mirror, run it live, run it in virtual machines, install it, give it to your friends – and, most importantly, have fun!

Cheers,

    Congratulations!
    >> small issues with dkms pre-compiled drivers
I could not install fglrx 861. The same problem was to update for this version after installation of beta3
    Thanks!

  2. Estou esperando ancioso pela versao final

  3. finid says:

For those of us that do not ave a mirror yet, how about a link to a list of mirrors in the article?

  4. Android says:

When will the final version of Mandriva?
How long can I wait for you Mandriva released immediately

  5. Ciușcă A. says:

I am sorry to say. I have to give up Mandriva. The new Mandriva development policy is not a good one. Good bye Mandriva, RIP. What you offer now it is not Mandriva in any way. It is just something, an ordinary Linux distribution, an unfortunate mixture between KDE and Gnome desktops. I hope those from Mageia will keep allive the spirit of old Mandrake and Mandriva 2010, and solve some minor issues they have with Mageia 1 distribution.

  6. xaccrocheur says:

This just rocks. I can’t wait for the new version, Mandriva is just whats works best for me. Since 1999.

  7. danspr says:

First of all, just say that this is a very promising version, it looks great. Now a question: Is there any plan to include digiKam instead of Shotwell, as the first is a KDE application??

    Thanks

    • Sale says:

Couldn’t agree more about this. Digikam is so much better and also integrates better into the desktop. And I think the same should be with replacing Pitivi with Kdenlive for video editing.

      • if they have replaced digiKam with shotwell, then i have no intention of trying or downloading mandriva anymore……two apps that i need for my daily work are digiKam and darktable!!

        • Eugeni Dodonov says:

Digikam was included in previous beta versions, but ROSA Labs requested its replacement with Shotwell for better design and usability issues. But it is available for installation anyway.

  8. Brewen says:

This looks suspiciously like PCLinuxOs. Mageia has it beat all to crap. IS this gonna include More software such as Same Gnome or Same Game. Is there a way to create complete games in linux that is included in the package? Anyway if this is half as good as Mageia I am in because I downloaded mageia and it’s the best system I have seen yet.

  9. Owen Arthur LaPrath says:

If you cannot find a distribution, right now I am loading the 2011 RC from this directory in my nearest mirror:
http: (stroke) (stroke) mirrors.kernel.org (stroke) mandriva/Mandrakelinux/devel/iso/2011/
I think the paths are organized very similarly across all the mirrors, so please don’t just click the above link and overload that server :)

  10. sylvainsjc says:

    Very good job.

As I’ve said elsewhere : If all is well finished with performances and stability, Mandriva, with ROSA Labs customization softwares, will make the difference with other KDE distributions and become the best KDE desktop ;)

Other distributions like Fedora, Suse or Mageia, compiles KDE without really providing customization and usability and in fact they all look alike

  11. Peter Lowrie says:

What I wish Mandriva would do is add support via drakx for the entire matrox range, especially Parhelia cards.

  12. clemi46 says:

I’ve made a review of Mandriva 2011 RC1. Youcon watch it at http://discoverlinux-clemi46.blogspot.com/p/toutes-les-reviews.html (sorry but it’s in french ^^).

  13. dexter11 says:

Overall it’s better than beta 3 was but it still has some annoying issues. Pop-up galore (kresource manger right at kde start, network manager, password window whenever you click on a previously unmounted partition), network manager still can’t handle a DSL connection.

On my low-end machine it’s very slow. I think you just made a conscious decision to leave old systems behind, even the default screen is clearly not for 1024×768. I can live that, after all there’s plenty other distros to choose from. However why don’t you post minimum system requirements? You just frustrate those people who have old machines and don’t want\can’t upgrade.

  14. Rajeev says:

It is faster than beta release. I have checked following application/tools
C/C++ ,opengl, openmp, codeblocks, apache and mysql.
I found some issues, Application Launcher menu taking long time to load. Some time Shutdown button is not working, logout time is too long. Firefox is freezing , if I open many tabes.
one suggestion is pleas include programming languages(c,c++,java)and codeblocks IDE along with the iso file. so Students will get the benefits(most of village students have no internet connection)

  15. tim says:

magayas sucks we dont want a spin off we want the real deal we dont want a distro that takes steps backwards we wanna move forward been using mandriva since 99 and its been through some ups and downs if u dont like mandriva use mageia and your shitty small package manager

  16. dro says:

im tired of hearin bout mageia if u like it use it and keep it movin this is mandriva over here ive tried mageia and its buggy and doesnt impress me at all mandriva 2011 will come around nice always does

  17. Joao Humberto says:

I reinstalled Mandriva 2011 RC1 and it damaged the Grub and nothing boots from the disk. To be able to access the Internet I have to boot the CD and them access the Internet with Firefox. How can I recover this error? I need Windows 7 or Mandriva to boot.
Appreciate very much for any help. I do not have CD on my Toshiba Notebook. I have USB and CD to start from.

    My best regards,
    Joao Humberto

    • bedi says:

I think there is also a way to re-install grub directly from a interface, try drakboot
Or,if no success via graphic mode, i would make it like this:

      - Boot in live mode
      - Mount the Mandriva / partition (like, mount /dev/sda1 /mnt)
      - chroot to the Mounted Mandriva (like: chroot /mnt)
      - inside the chroot become root and execute: grub-install /dev/sda

  18. jose says:

    hi everybody,

    I´ve tried mandriva 2011 rc, it´s beautiful
the only problem was with my dvd unit ( it´s a LG ) it didn´t work
I suppose that it was due to a firmware problem, it,s not a final release.
I think that the mendriva and rosa team is doing a fantastic work , from my point of view this is the best release in years.
    good luck

    • bedi says:

Well, just in case, you can dump the iso to a pendrive, i don’t have a DVD drive at home, so this was, at last, my solution.
dd if=iso-localization of=/dev/sdX where X is the pendrive, like /dev/sdb in my case.

I hope it may help you :)

      • jose says:

in fact I dumped the iso in a pen drive with mandriva seed, and the I instaled it in a hard drive that I use to tests.
The dvd/cd-rom unit didn´t work, when I push the open button to insert a cd or dvd it starts opennig and then suddenly closes so i can use it.
I have to push the open button several times and finally when I can insert a cd it is not detected.
In any way, I know that this problen will be solved
mandriva 2011 will be the best kde desktop I´m sure

  19. Free CRM says:

brejeiro!! I am agree with you this version is not easy.
    Thanks for great info.

  20. Humbert says:

Thanks!!! Perfect. I Love Mandriva forever..

  21. Frans van Kralingen says:

Pity, after the initial start everything seems to work except skype is not one of the installed packages (x86_64) and mandriva-update keeps popping up with new packages available and after starting update comes up with an empty list – all is already updated. manual update reveals a new rpmpackage is available after which some more updates are available. After update, the mouse and keyboard input no longer works and a restart seems nesesary – and now the x server for display :0 cannot be started – also no consoles are available – stuck system – and this is an rc?

    2011 installed into an VirtualBox-v408 running in Mandriva 2010.2 on a Dell1535studio

  22. RevoDEB says:

What I liked about this version and I thank you, is smoothing and change the typeface (font) that gave Mandriva.

Now I can say if it is “Out-Of-The-Box”, ready to work! Office without any problems, read emails, websites well displayed.

Distro with personality and professional. It is a pleasure to give us a good job this way.

Tárdense all you want, you better slow in coming. And Mandriva mark a big step in the whole Linux ecosystem.

The truth distros like Mandriva, are deeply that test to offer a good product without deception, without shells or strange things still green.

    a greeting

  23. Clay Haapala says:

Installation successful on Dell Precision M4400 laptop. The install process was quite slow, especially the several parts that have no or little user feedback on progress. I have Windows 7-64 on this laptop, and had previously installed Mdv 2011B3, which I over-wrote with RC1.

  24. Roberto Guerra says:

When is the final release planned? I have a brand new workstation at work and been waiting for Mdv 2011 so I won’t have to reinstall in a few months. My boss keeps bugging me about unpacking it and putting it to use. :-P

  25. Scott says:

    Well I’m in a VirtualBox right now, and I have absolutely no sound from a fresh install of Mandriva 2011 RC. I’ve installed the guestadditions as well from VB web site, and still.. no audio. I tried launching kmix;

    [scott@localhost ~]$ kmix
    kmix(3365) Mixer::setGlobalMaster: Mixer::setGlobalMaster() card= “ALSA::HDA_VIA_VT82xx:1″ control= “PCM:0″
unnamed app(3364): Communication problem with “kmix” , it probably crashed.
Error message was: “org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply” : ” “Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)” ”

Kmix is not displayed in the system monitor… So far, I’m not a huge fan of KDE, and I figured I’d give it a try… but so far.. I’m a bit disappointed that I can’t even hear anything. Next problem.. I got to turn the computer off.. and it just sits there… try and tell it to restart again.. and the RED button doesn’t do anything! What is going on here?

  27. TJ says:

Tried it, wireless lan didn’t work. I’ve tried 3 adapter, none of them worked. The system seems very buggy, restarting the computer through the menus didn’t work, as well. It needs to be polished before I’ll ever use it again. If my USB adapter isn’t recognized I’ll remove the distro. I know it may sound lazy or snobby but from an end user standpoint something as basic as a wireless adapter should work. It’s kept me from keeping Debian, Ubuntu, and now Mandriva 2011. Its not a Linux only problem, 2 of my adapters aren’t recognized by Windows 7 and none of them worked on Vista, yet they were all immediately recognized and worked flawlessly on XP just like they did with Mandriva 2010. I know this is a release candidate, but simple hardware should work, especially when given 3 different adapters. I’ll stick with Mageia for now.

  29. motitos says:

I could finally find some time to try it out, and I found some weak points:

    1) Language issues: I had to uninstall more than 30 languages via urpme (kde-l10n-**), although I told the installer to do so. Moreover, there is an icon in Russian next to the PowerSync one! In addition, I had to install the Spanish for Firefox, and in rpmdrake there is a long list of languages for Firefox.

    2) The package flashplayer-plugin is *not* installed by default. Sorry, but this is a must, specially for newbies. Same problem with Java. Come on, in a 1.5GB iso there is room for Java and flashplayer-plugin.

    3) Why do you stick to Parole? Nobody uses it (well, I’m just kidding). You know that the number one media progam is VLC, so why don’t you include vlc and remove Parole? Now, the size is an excuse, not a reason. Please, you should simplify the media stuff a little: video editors have to be included in the repos, but they’re not really necessary on the iso.

    4) The unistall feature of rpmdrake is not working.

Of course, this is just the opinion of one user. Bye for now!
