Mandriva 2011 beta3

Hi folks,

as was previously announced in cooker mailing list, Mandriva and Rosa teams has decided that additional time would be needed to finish the stabilization of Mandriva 2011 and Rosa 2011 desktop editions. Therefore, as was promised last week on cooker mailing list, I am gladly presenting to you Mandriva 2011 beta3 version, which should be available on your favorite mirror shortly.

Among the highlights of this release, the following items are present:

  • - from now on, the image contains non-free software for improved desktop experience, such as dkms drivers and non-free firmware for improved out-of-the-box functionality of peripheral devices
  • - new UI theme for widgets, KDM and KDE environment, developed by ROSA Labs, is provided by default
  • - new features in system panel (rosapanel), stack folders and system start menu (SimpleWelcome, also known as ROSA Starter),
  • - new TimeFrame feature, powered by nepomuk technology, which provides semantic desktop capabilities to the initial menu, allowing you to easily browse your files by date
  • - new dolphin file browsing interface
  • - a mass-rebuilding procedure was carried out to improve the system stability for supported packages
  • - and, of course, lots of bugfixes and package updates

Among notable software version updates are systemd 27, kernel 2.6.38.7 and syslinux 4, among many others.

Have fun!

    Very expected!! ^_^
    Congratulations =)

  2. Edwin says:

    Congratulations… Mandriva is the best

  3. Tammy says:

What about the minimum hardware requirements? Thanks.

    • Eugeni Dodonov says:

If you have more than 512MB of RAM, and more than 1024×768 resolution available, and processor superior to 900MHz it should work just fine with most features enabled.

To have the best experience, you should have a graphical card which supports KDE effects (any recent intel/ati/nvidia card should do just fine).

      • DigiFree says:

512 MB of memory is extremely little. In my experience at least 1 GB is needed and even with this when you open a lot of apps it becomes quickly to little for nice experience.

        • Andrew says:

You may get lucky with low performance hardware, but I would suggest 1GB if you plan to use the live CD option. Go for gnome for xfce or kde for lxde and use the lighter version desktop. You may get more apps running. Also consider for example Abiword and GnuSpread ove r OpenOffice and keep an eye on your processor & memory usage!

  4. patrick_darcy says:

how about a 64 bit download link.

thanks , distrowatch seems to be broken. thanks again

  5. I am confident to this release it will be a very good one as usual in the last 10 years.

  6. sylvainsjc says:

    Very good Engeni.
The 2011 version with new look and new features seems to be awesome

    • Eugeni Dodonov says:

The credits for most of the UI and new features go to ROSA Labs team, they did an amazing job! :)

  7. Hans Micheelsen says:

Thank you very much, Mandriva. I look forward to test.

You forgot to mention where to get it? I found it here: ftp://ftp.ciril.fr/pub/linux/mandrivalinux/devel/iso/2011/
But I would prefer a torrent.

  8. No problem.

  9. Henry says:

y smplayer & clementine por defecto! ^.^ , me encanta mas todavia! ;)

  10. rugyada says:

    Thank you Mandriva, good job!

Very innovative user interface with a surprising and heavily customized KDE.
Well chosen colours, with the black background and clear icons above, a fine combination.

    Congraturation from MIB Team.

  11. George Borusiewich says:

Just downloaded Mandriva 2011 beta 3. I like it so far. Hopefully you will upgrade Grub to the latest version before your final version. It is very difficult to multi-boot 3 linux operating systems if they are using different versions of Grub.

  12. motitos says:

Today I’ve installed the beta 3 in my wife’s notebook, getting the following three main improvements: wifi card detected (not detected in previous versions), bluetooth detected out of the box, and the computer shuts down properly. Congrats! Bye now, I’ve not detected any important bug.

Suggestion: make the Rosa menu icons smaller. They’re too big. The ones in the bar are fine, but when you want to find some program or a place, the icons are so big that you get lost. Also, it is not possible to move around of find something fast within the Rosa menu, since the touchpad has to be configured after.

Please, when you launch the final version, you should warn the users that new Rosa-KDE configuration will conflict with the 2010.2-KDE one, so ask the users to either delete their .kde4 directory or to add a new user.

    Good job!

  13. dave says:

In mandriva 2011 we can see the new and improved mandriva control center with mandriva application manager?

    • Eugeni Dodonov says:

If you open KDE systemsettings, there should be some entires for Mandriva Control Panel, but they do not work correctly at the moment due to latest changes in pyside :( . But they will soon, wait for updates :) .

      • dave says:

Sorry but my pc don’t boot from dvd so i must wait cd one edition. So my question was if we can see the new MCC and the MAM in the 2011 release or we have to wait for the 2012.

        • bedi says:

Hello, the current iso you can also dump to a pendrive and boot. But, beta 3 has some issue, this feature is broken in some way and will probably fixed on the first RC.
If you want to try anyway, you can workaround this by editing grub command line and switch root=LABEL=blablabla with root=/dev/sdb1

    Dear developers, congretulations.
May I tell you I encountered shorewall common failed…..
    Good luck.

  15. Tiago Vieira says:

The beta version can be updated by the manager or just installing the new version?

    • bedi says:

Hello Tiago, we made a lot of tests on upgrades, mostly on RPM RPM5 side, it works, but i would say some skills are needed in case you run into trouble, like kde issues, you have to know how to delete the .kde4/share/config dir, quite simple for older linux users, but not that simple for newcomers. So, i recommend for newcomers a fresh install, and for experienced guys, you can do the upgrade. I am not a newcomer, but a i do fresh install anyway, it may speed the system up.. but that’s just a guess :D

  16. DigiFree says:

Love the look of new release and how well it works with hardware. Too bad I was not able to install it by just using dd with ISO to put it to USB. Also it would be much nicer to replace Pitivi with Kdenlive for video editing. Kdenlive is a lot better. I also prefer Amarok over Clementine for playing music. Other than that it is almost perfect.

  18. eMan says:

I’ve read that Mandriva releases every six months
But the last stable version was in 2010
    quote (Wikipedia)

    Latest version
The latest stable version is Mandriva Linux 2010 Spring (Farman), also called Mandriva Linux 2010.1, released on 2010-07-08.And Mandriva 2010.2(also named Farman) is an incremental update on top of Mandriva 2010.1, incorporating all the security and bugfix updates since its release.

Is Mandriva a dead project ? or it’s goal as release every six month has changed ?
When will be the next stable release ?
    Forgive my poor English
    Thank you

  19. Snip3rM00n says:

Glad to see Mandriva is still hanging in there! :)

  20. rams says:

Great improvement to Kernel and MDV that takes full advantage of Dual Core.
Superb, Fast and VirtualBox VM’s seems to be running on physical hardware !
Please keep this (CPU Performance) into RC / Final Release and future versions !

  21. Zedias says:

When do you suppose we should expect the final release?

  22. Emil says:

Just a question: Have you considered using this Firefox skin: https://addons.mozilla.org/es-ES/firefox/addon/jupiter-firefox/ ???? It fits very well with the rest of KDE programmes.

  23. JanS says:

Why can’t I use Sagem Fast 800 or Speedtouch 330 to conect with internet? Firmwares are installed, but Mandriva doesn’t find these modems. Can somebody help me with this problem?
PS. Sorry, but my english isn’t good. I’m Polish.

  24. fromhell says:

The beta3 looks very promising. Stable, fast, great and profesional looking, great improvements (I love the new stack folders), : ) )
The only thing that I don’t get the point yet is the new rosa launcher…Those icons are too big, and I don’t like this gigantic launcher that occuped all my screen size. The timeline idea is great, but still has some minor bugs.
but, anyway, keep the good work!!

  25. Pavel says:

    Eugeni,
thanks a lot for your efforts.
    TO ALL THE FOLKS:
Could you advice me which version should I use – i586 or x86_64? I have 2 gb RAM and Pentium Dual-Core E5200 processor.
At the moment, I am using Mandriva 2010 x86_64, but i don’t like much the way it works (WinXP works faster).
What should I do to make my pc work faster – use i586 or increase memory size? I don’t play games, but I use my pc for editing photos and video.
One more question. Is it worth downloading beta 3 right now? Or maybe it makes sense to wait for a staible release?

    • bedi says:

2GB is a lot of RAM, i know x64 eats more memory than x86, you also edit videos and pictures… i think i would use the 32bits version. I don’t think more RAM is needed.

  26. Jorge says:

    Muchas gracias.

  27. Max Daniel says:

    Congratulations
I just want to know what are the minimum requirement for it. 512 MB is enough for it?

    • Corran says:

Hi, yes, it is right on the verge. I would recommend using a “light” windowing system (xfce) for machines with less than 1GB RAM, but it could be used with KDE too if one don’t mind it’s sluggish and slow (I have done so myself in a virtual machine).

Best option is to get a little bit more RAM, it’s quite cheap these days (we throw 1GB-modules in the trash here at work now).

  28. M.S.Pratap chandran says:

What to do to get mobile phone to be recognized. kubuntu does it well out of the box.i.e.when mob. is plugged through usb ,net work manager icon changes to a mobile ph. icon.and we can config it easily.Mandriva doesn’t even recognize when usb wire is plugged in.

  29. dro says:

yes it does i plug my blackberry bold 9700 in all the time and a blk berry icon pops up and lets me do whatever

  30. dro says:

love this distro cant wait for the final release i”ll always use mandriva and only mandriva =]

  31. ferri says:

    I like this distro too.
This beta 3 is quite good.

    I have one note.
According me Pager (switching virtual desktops) and Lock/Logout applets are more needed on panel than Kopete, Clementine, Thunderbird.

    • ferri says:

A few minutes ago I’ve finished updating beta 3.
System is suddenly very very slow, long boot time.
This time I’m without internet connection because network center doesn’t detect my mobile modem and knetworkmanager is out of order.
Non updated system from install dvd was OK, updated is KO.

  32. kassandra says:

  33. Ciușcă A. says:

You eliminate every little thing that I have loved in Mandrake and Mandriva. Mandriva was, stable, reliable, easaly configurable, a beautifull installer that user can interact with to chose every detail he/she wanted, simple and intuitive desktop, with two clicks access for applications. Now we have Rosa, only a wilted rose, a disgrace for Mandrake and Mandriva. You can make graphic improvments, decorations and effects, but why do you have to follow the mistakes of Ubuntu or Microsoft, and change something good, beautifull, simple.

  34. byakuya says:

Goddamn my lovely Mandriva is still running Omg ,, I thought 2010.1 was the very last version and that Mandriva will no longer be developed .. I can´t wait to install this new version .. Mandriva forever <3

  35. Ciuşcă A. says:

The install process takes a long time, almost 40 min. (my PC is a performat one), and you have eliminated all the options to configure the system during the install process. Now I can not select packages, configure hardware, eliminate or add applications and soft desired, configure network during the install. Now I have a decripit installer like in Ubuntu or Kubuntu. I tink I will migrate to Fedora or Linux Mint, because Fedora keept his installer and Linux Mint KDE can be installed, configured and updated in 20 min if you know what to do. Please give me back the old installer and let me chose everything according to my needs.

  36. user says:

When it finally comes out the final mandriva 2011?

  37. dave says:

Please resize the menu icons. They are extremely big, all the menu is extremely big. I’m speaking about rosa launcher.

  38. mduan says:

If I install this beta3, can it auto update to the final version when it is released?

    • bedi says:

Yes! But you have to remover the ‘cooker’ medias manually and add the 2011.0 ones, otherwise you will continue to use cooker and join the 2012 release development :)

  39. Amir says:

  40. John J. Duffy says:

    Hello:
As a linux user for 12 years (Mandriva for 6) I am disturbed by the default KDE install. I have used Fluxbox for 5 years and find
its minimal resource use perfect. I only hope that Man 2011 will allow me to install Fluxbox…then remove all vestiges of KDE.
    Thank you.

    • bedi says:

      Sure you can:
      urpme task-kde4; urpmi fluxbox

And maybe do some manual intervention, to remove unneeded libs and other stuff that may remain, but you as a long user surely will not urn into trouble regarding this :D

  41. ted says:

seriously dude fluxbox? lol were well past the fluxbox days, this will be a good release, with or without shitty fluxbox….

  42. dro says:

i gotta agree inless your computers old or something fluxbox isnt really needed i perfer kde anyways and you can always grab xfce (which is lighter) in the repos

  43. wasteman says:

2011.0b3 looks sweet in Live mode, but does not install correctly for me
On rebooting I get asked about the time zone, it suggests Sao Paulo when I’ve selected UK on installation, then the UI freezes and that’s my lot

    • wasteman says:

It’s just GRUB getting confused by the order of mixed IDE and SATA disks, took me a day to work it out, and manually edit menu.lst to get it right

Running beta3 x86_64 in VirtualBox on 2010.2 and really liking it so far (except for the Rosa Starter Menu that pops up over nearly the whole screen when you first log on, so annoying). Thankfully, there’s a traditional menu based application launcher panel widget, though it currently has an Evolution icon associated with it (bug), not the mandriva star in a blue circle.

  44. kymd says:

The article is well written, like very much here

  45. CMan says:

Support for GSM modem was poor in 2010.2 (Ubuntu was better). Hope the story is better this time!

    • ferri says:

It is more better in beta 3.
But this time my mobile internet crashes after updating package plasma-applet-networkmanagement.

  46. nrama says:

May I suggest that the NOT REQUIRED hardware and language support packages be available as options prior to install rather than after install as in a previous version of Mandriva. It save heaps of time.

I think this version is a major step forward despite the glitches I am experiencing. Booting into the normal OS for example leads to dracut from which I have no clue as to recovery. The failsafe option produces a workable desktop except that I cannot invoke MCC.Although video playback is possible in both SMPlayer and VLC there is no sound,Clementine works fine.

I am sure these minor distractions can be esily fixed.

  47. rability and you can team these shoes with the best outfits you have to get that ultimate sporty look. You can wear plain trousers or golf pants with these trainers. The colours in which they are available.
