Mandriva Application Manager preview

(Posting on behalf of Paulo Belloni, from Conectiva team).

Hi folks!
Today we have posted the first publicly available screencast of the new Mandriva Application Manager (MAM) on youtube. It shows the basic look&feel.
There are many features to come and improvements to do.
Soon we are are going to deliver the first alpha (at least a tech preview) too.
Cheers,
Paulo

  1. Tsiolkovsky says:

It looks very nice visually but the packages display would be much more useful as a list and not as a grid, I think. So that It would be more similar to how it currently is in Mandriva as it more nicely shows the information.

Also I wonder how this will fit as embedded into MCC. Or will MCC also be rewriten in Qt Quick and become much nicer looking?

    • Eugeni Dodonov says:

      In QT+QML actually :) .

      • Alejandro Nova says:

Clap clap clap clap clap clap ;)

Happy to see the former KDE Red Hat Linux remix, Mandrake Linux, return to their former self and become a ground-breaking KDE distro again.

        • Paulo Belloni says:

Thanks Alejandro! We are working hard to bring and exchange ideas with the community.

    • Paulo Belloni says:

Thanks Tsiolkovsky! List is among the features we have already planned, so, it will be there and will be able to switch and customize the way you like it. We are going to have an unique framework to from where MCC, MAM and other tools are going to be built.

  2. Emdek says:

Looks nice, but I would prefer more native look (waiting for QML native widgets). ;-)

  3. That looks quite good. I agree with Tsiolkovsky a bit, a list would be good too. In other words, a choice between a list or a grid should be available. The application should “remember” the last choice made, list or grid, when it next opens. I look forward to seeing it on my production desktop systems here.

  4. gnemmi says:

Looking good but I like the list better too …
Furthermore, I would split the pane horizontally … package list on top, tabs with info on the currently selected package below.

  5. Topo says:

    Sorry for my bad eng.
    Составил из других.
Looking good but I like the list better too. Сhoice between a list or a grid should be available.

  6. sylvainsjc says:

Rewrite the older SF is a very good thing.
Please, today, It is absolutely necessary to propose a screenshot of a selected application, his rating and Users review.
A Choice between list or grid should be proposed
    What’s next feature ?

  7. ferri says:

    Modern, intuitive, handsome.

  8. Realmkeeper says:

Needs icon/list buttons, like in Dolphin for example.

With a few items to look at, icon view is okay; but, with many items to look through – especially if there are long-named ones, which all have the same first part to their names – a list is most times much better. Perhaps the software world has gone a bit icon-view crazy these days. In a list view, for example, you can have two lines (or more) – and more information on the same line, example:
    1. Application Name 1.a. (Installed/Not Installed/Picked for Install/For Removal)
    2. Brief Description

Note, the ability to quickly pick how much or little information to show in the main window would also be good. And, be able to customize where the information is shown.

Also, hopefully this is just a prototype, and that the release version will at least attempt to follow the theme colours picked by the user, and not imitate the annoying ways of Amarok with breaking all the colours picked by the user by just about making everything look the same/similar colour. List windows, menu panels, borders, EVERYTHING changed to look like a blot of mono-colour. Please, keep the colour scheme as it’s meant – to make the different sections easy to view and pleasant on the eye. The user should pick the colours to use, not the application.

    • Paulo Belloni says:

Thanks for your comment and suggestions Realmkeeper. We really care about them. The screencast only gives a taste of what we are planning. List of items will be there and customization too!

Looks great, much better than the current one. I hope it comes out soon :)
Though I do agree…A list might be a little better. But either way, looks great!

  10. dave says:

Really nice! I think that the provision as a list of packages is the best thing, the current one could get out the eyes from their sockets. So you plan to rewrite the other mandriva tools, such as the MMC?
    (Sorry for my bad english)

    • Paulo Belloni says:

Thanks dave. Yes, MCC is going to be changed too. Our effort is to get an unique visual and point of access to all Mandriva tools and system configuration. More to come!

  11. Finally a BIG STEP FORWARD for Mandriva :)
I’m thrilled to see this initiative of “kiosk take two” ;)
It’s nice but it’s too “geek” for the rest of the mortals (the majority of users).
So, nice to have all the advanced functionalities from MCC and for advanced users, but where Mandriva must do an enormous effort is in simplifying the process and hide all this advanced layers (dependencies, packages,…) and adopt more an Apple App Store approach: have the list of icons (widgets) for the available applications and when you select an application access its details: description, screenshots, rating, other users comments, link to the application site, link to Mandriva dedicated forum, donate or buy option.
In an era of GUI OS and applications it’s better to concentrate the effort and offer to the end user an application management tool that’s completely based on GUI applications first, ans secondly offer the advanced functionalities. I don’t suggest to have the same install mechanism as in Mac OS X by dragg&drop, but you got the idea of the simplicity :) To resume, try to think “what do I have to do that my girl friend/wife/siste/kid don’t bother me with questions about how to install this, how to access that, and so on” :)
Trust me, you’ll thnak me because you’ll have more free time and Mandriva will face an enormous success!

    • Paulo Belloni says:

Thanks Florin! We understand pretty well your concerns and believe me we have them under strict observation. The screencast shows some features and there others to come. Among them, customization. So you can get what you want. This is the first step towards something bigger that will allow the community to share information and improve the data. We will not get where we want right at first one, but we hope to get the right path and improve it together with the community.

  12. Arvi Pingus says:

Very nice, but even nicer with an option to switch to a list.
Keep on with the good work.
Windows without walls? Linux is a good house for everyone. :)

    • Paulo Belloni says:

Thanks Arvi. Actually MAM is still under construction and there are many other features not shown on the video. List view and a switch mode is among them. Soon we will give more hints…

  13. Carlo Borger says:

This looks really great, and is one of the reasons I have a Powerpack subscription, all the family here is using Mandriva on the desktop and the only complaints I hear is only about games :-)
the new MAM gives a good idea that we are entering a new era of possibilities and shows spring as now begun..
good work and keep on going this way.
(when I look back upon the first Mandrake 9.1.4 I installed and the latest 2010.2 the differences are amazing!

    • Paulo Belloni says:

Thanks Carlo! You have got the right feeling and decision too! :) Cheers for you and your family!

  14. Genix Info says:

I hope it’s as quick and efficient as the Smart Package Manager: http://labix.org/smart/

  15. Wayne Sallee says:

When the list is done, make sure it has all of the columns like Mandriva currently has, and allow sorting by column.
I recently tested out Fedora, and hated the way that they have everything in just one column.

  16. motitos says:

Is there any available preview in cooker? What is the exact name of the package? I’m asking because search in rpmdrake is broken…

    Thanx in advance!
