Mandriva 2011 beta1

Hi all,

despite being some days late due to unexpected problems, Mandriva 2011 beta1 should be available on your favorite mirrors soon. Among lots of package updates, it features KDE 4.6.1, visual theme updates, systemd 20, networkmanager 0.8.3.997, firefox 4.0.0rc1, bash 4.2, chromium browser versions which match google chrome, and TexLive 2011 integrated and used instead of tetex by default.

Besides packages updates, it also features plasma-applet-stackfolder application, developed by ROSA Labs, which will make part of new Mandriva 2011 UI. To see it in action, simple drag any folder from dolphin to KDE taskbar, and have fun :) .

Edit: unfortunately, a problem was discovered in Mandriva 2011 32-bits images, which prevents it from booting in some cases. We are investigating the issue, and will let you know when it is solved!

  2. jasper says:

It should be TeXlive 2010, not 2011.

      [eugeni@blackbeer-x86_64 11:16:39 ~] $ rpm -q texlive
      texlive-20110312-1-mdv2011.0.x86_64
this looks like 2011 to me :)

      • jasper says:

Thanks Eugeni. I think 2010 refers to the version released by the TeX Users Group, but 2011 refers to the rpm of the distro. Anyway, I could be wrong!

Hope this will include kernel 2.6.38 to get the new performance enhancements?

Looks nice, though I was not able to get nvidia working (geforce 9400M). First, I tried a normal way and install nvidia kernel modules and generate xorg.conf via nvidia-xconfig. Xserver does not start after reboot
    Xorg.log ends with:

I’ve tried to configure xserver via Mandriva center config and the test fails as for commerical nvidia driver
    as for nouveau.

I downloaded the 64 bit iso, got the latest all.rdz and vmlinuz and wasted a whole night trying to hard drive install this.
It was only when I gave up and decided to burn a DVD that I found that it was a live CD iso.
Nowhere is this mentioned – and there is no clue in the filename.
    Hmm…

  6. I loved Mandriva…but the thing that i really never liked at all is the package manager…
….it doesnt show how many MB of software is yet to be downloaded…..or even the number of packages which are left to be downloaded. This was the most annoying thing, for users like us here in Maldives where internet is slow and expensive this is a big issue….cant you guys take the same approach has synaptic where it shows the number of packages yet to be downloaded and a progress bar for all packages to be downloaded, instead of showing it for individual packages!!

Other than for me Mandriva Is Perfect!

  7. Pablo says:

Really good news! By the way, I’m not aware of MCC at this moment, but, is it planned to develop a QT frontend in the near future? I mean, the KDE integration in Mandriva is one of my favourites and I’d like to have the posibility of avoiding GTK+ or GTK-Perl as a dependency for the system control center or administrative tools. I think it would rise desktop and distro homogeneity to a new level. Anyone?

    Keep up the good work!

  8. hopeful says:

Being an old mandriva user I had high hopes for this release, and although it’s still in beta this is dreadful.

I downloaded the 64bit iso which is a huge 1.6GB and it took an age to install; and age to reboot and after a second reboot it was still like treacle.

Having 1.6GB download I thought at least most app bases would be covered but boy was I wrong!

I hope the devs get this sorted by full release time otherwise a lot more of us will be defecting (and probably not being replaced by new users either)

  9. Hello

I have been a Mandr(ake) user since day one and love the distro as it was AND is, however, I do have a question in regards to the 2011 64 bit release. Will it be released as a ‘full’ distro rather or/and in addition to the current KDE Live Desktop system that is in the pre-releases. What I mean by ‘full distro’ is the previous release size of 4.x GB which contained all the other goodies. I miss the big package :)

I know I can always install the 1.x GB release and add all the cooker repositories to retrieve all the extras (e.g. programming, libs, etc., servers, etc.), but it would be nice to see a ‘full size’ option as well.

    Tnx

  10. Oops….as in ‘previous release’ as I stated just above, I mean the 2010.2 and earlier releases….which had the KDE version for local users as well as the full 4.x gb version for i586 and x86_64 versions.
