Mandriva 2011 Alpha2

Hi,

2nd Alpha version of Mandriva 2011 should be appearing on mirrors shortly.

Among the most noticeable features are the simplification of the initial setup steps, both when running the image in Live mode, or before the installation, update to kernel 2.6.37.2, integration of the latest networkmanager-mdv plugin by Andrey Borzenkov, switch from scim to ibus for input framework, more indepth systemd integration into the system, and, of course, lots of packages updates all around.

Have fun!

    Hi,

Good news indeed, though I have the C.D. of Mandriva 2010 KDE which I have used for a few months but dumped because of KDE related issue, the distro is quite good. My question will be for the 2010 version, till when I’ll be able to get security and crucial updates?

    Good see Mandriva progressing!

Does this version have support for the Intel Poulsbo video driver?

I’ll be watching this closely. I remain a Mandriva fan, despite the fact I abandoned Mandriva in my computers due to fears about the distro not being supported anymore and slow boot times (systemd takes care of that, so I’ll be installing 2011 ;) ) Please, bring a semi rolling release option and I’ll be happy ;) .

Installed alpha2 yesterday, was unsuccessful installing alpha1.

The installation is painfully slow – I hate installations from ‘live cd’ – you have no control over config and they are slow. I suspect that decompression took time but the DVD image was only 1.5G – why do you even need compression ?

Also, I tried to format partition with reiserfs4 as it was an option, just to see performance and I got an error that reiserfsprogs4 was not available. I am also disappointed to see that mandriva switched to networkmanager from netapplet/ifconfig. Mandriva had the best network configuration tools…untiil 2011. networkmanager blows hard, like everything that redhat and their cohorts try to shove down our throats ( gnome, ext*, RPM etc).

Is there a way to get this release to boot from a USB stick? I have tried Mandriva seed, and it fails with a complaint about not being able to mount “/”. I have also tried copying directly to the flash drive with “dd”, as I used to with earlier releases, and not surprisingly it fails with the same message.

    Thanks,

I´ve tried this alpha2. It was the first time I connect my mobile internet without any problem.
I only plugged usb and pressed few buttons. New Network Manager is according me very good combination managers from Kde and Gnome.
On the other side I have problems with refreshing open windows, especially during browsing via menu items of this windows. For example I´ve have opened Firefox, Control center …
Main menu have been working corectly.

I think this is “must try” distro. I downloaded it, and now it run in my notebook smoothly (beside some alpha quirks behaviors)

  18. Christian Lohmaier says:

The “simplified insatller” is a major pain, esp. when installing in a VM. I really hope the final version will actually allow to select another desktop-environment and the like.

And honestly, you should go back in time a couple of years and have a look on how Installation was handled in Caldera Linux. /That/ was a nice experience.
Basically it boils down to: It asks you for the stuff all in one go, *while already installing the base-stuff in the background*.
There is /no/ waiting in front of the screen until the next time when the installer needs some more info.

You give all information in one go (partitioning, package-selection, user setup, network-setup, everything the installer needs, and installation starts as soon as there is enough information (i.e. right after partitioning it can start installing basesystem, after package-selection it can continue with the rest). You provide all information in one go, without waiting time in between. (after all info was given, you could play pacman until the installation was done and you were promted to remove the CD and reboot, you could just leave it alone, do useful stuff instead of sitting in front of the PC and waiting for the next prompt)

It really sucks to have to wait in front of the screen until you can provide the next information.

Running Alpha2 Live DVD now on a Pentium4 3.2ghz with 1 GIG RAM
Boot time very slow compared to other live distros I have tried, I have been a follower of Madriva since Mandrake 8
So I have some history with your distro and I like it but really seems sluggish at boot time

I will not install it until a later release since it boot so slowly on my machine now.

Will there be any other Desktops available in 2011 version beside KDE ? Gnome, XFce etc… ?

Thanks for your hard work on this release

    Hi,

    Today I installed Mandriva 2011 Alpha2.

Installation is not as fast as 2010.2, it also lacks of the ia_ora-gnome theme so it looks flat.

I also installed Gnome and it did install but it did not work.

But what the heck?.. It is still Alpha.

    Let’s wait at least until beta2. :-)

BTW, I did like networkmanager, it works great, I was able to connect very fast with networks where I had to retry from 2 to 3 times to be able to connect, even with dhcpcd.
