Mandriva news by the board

Mandriva’s mission

Mandriva is the Linux distribution for all: enterprises and individuals, beginners or most advanced users.

Restructuration

Mandriva recovered from a difficult situation. The recovery was done through restructuring the debts, a simplification of the organization, a new investor and a new strategic focus. Mandriva wants :

  • to empower, as much as possible, its community,
  • to aggressively innovate on the desktop,
  • to create a specific education activity and distribution,
  • and finally to improve its server distribution and products.

Community

The Mandriva Community will be autonomous and governance structures will be created to ensure freedom. The Mandriva enterprise is just an element of this independent community.

A community manager will be hired by Mandriva to help the community to implement these plans.

The next version of the Mandriva community distribution will be available in spring 2011.

The community version of the Mandriva distribution is the one on which the Powerpack distribution, the Corporate Desktop distribution and the Mandriva Enterprise Server distribution are based upon.

From a desktop point of view, Mandriva intends to be the BEST KDE DISTRIBUTION IN THE WORLD : easy to use, stable, rich featured and with excellent localization.

Even if the community distribution will be KDE focused, we will encourage the community to build Gnome, LXDE, XFCE, E17, … versions as value options. The infrastructure to help the community to do that will be put in place.

Education distribution

A specialized version of Mandriva will be available in the coming months. It will allow to setup linux computers in a classroom within minutes with classroom control and class sharing possibilities. The configuration of the class computers will be extremely simplified.

Powerpack & Corporate desktop

Powerpack will come as usual with proprietary software and drivers with 18 months support and Corporate desktop will come with long term support (3 years). Next Powerpack and Corporate desktop version will come shortly after the community version.

Server

MES will be improved in order to continue to offer the simplest installation and management for system administrators for proprietary and open source software.

The best open source heterogeneous software and hardware management, Mandriva Pulse 2, will continue to evolve.

Mandriva plans to improve scalability features for all server products.

Mandriva Directory Server (MDS) will include a better Active Directory integration and an independent GPO framework.

New products

Tablets

Mandriva focuses on new version of distribution for different types of tablets with Intel & ARM platforms. We support MeeGo and work for new interface based on KDE Mobile and Qt.

Cloud

Currently Mandriva works on its cloud strategy internally and have a plan to begin community discussions shortly.

Online

The on-line Mandriva Store will be simplified and improved.

Various on-line services will be integrated in the desktop versions.

Developers

At this time Mandriva has 27 developpers spread between Brasil, France and Russia, as well as 4 subcontractors working on a monthly basis, and countless community contributors from all over the world that we will never thank enough.

Mandriva hires :

  • In Brazil 7 developers (and up to 20 in the next year)
  • In France 5 developers
  • In Russia, Mandriva has plans to extremely extend R&D and setup up to 15 people for testing & QA
  • Mandriva is looking for subcontractors.
  • Individual interested can contact rh@mandriva.com

About rumours

  • Mandriva is alive and will always be alive for its stakeholders (community, employees. Customers, suppliers etc).
  • We don’t change from RPM to DEB.
  • We don’t change Cooker, Cooker accounts and anything for working on distro.
  • Mandriva will have the pleasure to work with all kind of technical employees and it should not belong to few technical groups. Mandriva should be answerable to all its stakeholders (community, users, employees, customers, suppliers, etc….)

Wonderful news this. It gives me every reason to install the latest Mandriva on my soon-to-be-assembled desktop rig.

Best of luck and more power to the new Mandriva.

  5. Long live Mandriiva Linux! :D

Nice to see the survival of Powerpack and also about the KDE focus, not only does it intrigue me as a KDE user, but it also sets the distribution apart from the others. :o )

Quote “BEST KDE DISTRIBUTION IN THE WORLD”

Then why is every Mandriva’s tool is written in GTK? they look lame when run in KDE4.

I may be dense, but the “we do not change cooker” is quite incompatible with “we no longer support gnome and other” stance. As a gnome user, I must tell that I am not very pleased with the result. And I am also less than pleased with the change of the release cycle that was not even discussed with the community beforehand.

Anyway, since you mention the answerability, and since I am the only one left in France to manage the cluster, ldap and svn ( with bogdano on brasil, but he is not full time on it ), can you tell me what are the plan with regard of the admin team. Nicolas Rueff told me last week he would send a email to management, but I didn’t received a response yet, and I do not think you didn’t planned something about it.

Since Olivier Blin, Nicolas Vigier and half of the IS Team were liquidated, the team have been seriously hurt. And I think you releaize that you cannot rely only on a part time overloaded coder in Brasil, and a already busy volnteer to take care of this essential part of the cooker process ?

I think planet mandriva could be more vocal their status since mandriva constant rumors of going down under might affect many mandriva users to even consider it for server deployments which will hurt the company.

  18. gerlos says:

I’m happy to read these notes, and that there are plans to solve problems and improve the situation!

I think that mandriva websites should be improved: they changed too often look and structure in the last years, and made users difficult to feel how much great things and people there were in mandriva. Still they seem shattered, while they should be tigher, imho. Even in this blog, there’s not obvious, visible link to the mandriva main website. :-(

PS My favourite is: “Mandriva intends to be the BEST KDE DISTRIBUTION IN THE WORLD”. :-)

I am glad that mandriva is deciding to focus on KDE – equal effort on gnome and KDE was taking too much resources and distracting them from improving their product. After all, they don’t have a revenue stream like redhat ( who, inspite of all the money they rake in, only focus on gnome, leaving community to package KDE for redhat).

This is what I wanted to hear! Gnome distributions make me sick, so I can’t wait for the next release.

  39. Juan Bobo says:

This company claims to have recovered from financial difficult situation. They did it by robbing enthusiastic Linux users of their money and never paying any profit in return. My recommendations is don’t spend your money here, you will never see any return in fact they will ignore you.

  48. Dr. Asoka Dissanayake says:

I have voiced some concerns about Mandriva recently but never to see it fall.

On the contrary I want it to evolve stronger.

In any case my comments should be taken as constructive.

People leaving should had been given a golden handshake for their contribution when they were in. I think you did not handle this situation professionally.

Microsoft is their waiting in the wing to see your demise. They may even have put their agents to aggravate ( I hope not but judging by what they do even in this little Island -Ceylon) the already sour situation.

Unlike a divorce when Linux people diverge the fork another innovation.
Give them all the encouragement but never brick and bats.

After all like in politics there are no permanent friends or enemies but working alliances that Linux needs for its betterment.

If you visit blogspot at Google Asoka and parafox you may see my comments about 100 Live CDs I downloaded and.tested with my comments.

I have shown some of your weakness (All Linux Contributors are in someway or other poor managers).

I am not against healthy enterprise or making a reasonable profit.

    Think of your good products.

Globe Trotter was one good thing but you never continued. The price of portable hard disks are cheap that you can start it again.
But customer driven; get people to order and produce enough and little more (10% over the orders perhaps).

    U.S.B Mandriva is too expensive..

Make a Live Light version on U.S.B and Like Ubuntu give 5% as sales promotion free to Linux guys.

Please do not give it free to Sri-Lankans. They cannot value it.

Since the Government give free books to our students do not value books.or read them.

For Sri-Lankans make the price 2 to 3 times your price. Then our fellows will queue to buy it.

All our prices are anyway three times (Government tax 200%).

    Good Luck Guys and Girls.

    You can make it.

To Mageia Group, take a cue or two from PCLinux (my Gold standard for Live / Installable Linux) and forge a fantastic new distribution but do not be too ambitious because we have not recovered from Stock Market crisis (1.5 Millions have lost jobs over one year in America.

The market is here in Asia.

    Good Luck for you too.

  49. Alex Borrell says:

It certainly is good news! Remember, there are a lot of users like me using Mandriva (and have been for a long time now).
I would like to mention that the name Mandriva comes from Mandrake and Conectiva (at the time the leading Latinamerican linux distribution), so don’t forget your latinamerican users :)

  50. Jeevanism says:

This is a good news. I use Mandriva because
better than ubuntu in system response
I dont wanna type sudo always
    I love RPM than DEB
    and finallty Mandriva has GNOME…!!!

so all wishes for Mandriva SA…
