Mandriva has decided to help porting K3b, the leading and award-winning KDE burning software, to Qt4.
2 engineers of our KDE team are working together with Sebastian Trueg, the lead developer of this project, so that new version can be released sooner and hopefully for 2009 Spring release. Linux users will finally be able to make K3b use the full power of the KDE4 platform through Solid, Phonon and all the Plasma environment. Boiko is one of our 2 engineers working at the moment on this port.
What does your work consist in?
Boiko: KDE4 and Qt4 brought many new possibilities for developers. But in order to benefit from those possiblities, it is necessary to port all the KDE3/Qt3 code to these new infrastructure. K3b port has been started some time ago, but there are still a lot of work to be done. Our work is to finish this port work and at the same time to simplify the code by making use of the new KDE4 and Qt4 frameworks available for many of the tasks that used to be done “by hand” inside the application.
What are the targets in general and in KDE4?
Boiko: The main target is to get K3b working for at least the most common tasks (like burning data CDs and DVDs, Audio CDs, VCD, etc). Apart from that, the target is also to keep K3b integrated into KDE4 by adapting it to the new frameworks and guidelines.
Sebastian added: “Gustavo and Arthur are working on porting all project views to the Qt4 view/model architecture. They are processing very well and almost all projects have been ported. I ported the d’n'd support, fixed plugin management, and a few other things that broke with the change from KDE3 to KDE4. K3b trunk contains a lot of improvements which partially are not finished yet. I am trying to get most of it done for April.”
We wish them good work and see you at the end of 2009 Spring release!

It would be good also to help projects like Inkscape and also brings to The KMPlayer for Mandriva / linux (which is the best player of video for Windows – http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/index.php).
The Mandriva Clearly the distribution and easier to use for a new user (or even for several other types of users logically depending on each project / situation) that migrates Windows> Linux.
I feel that Mandriva still much to grow in some aspects but not wait to get the money needed to buy a notebook and also to buy a 2010 “ “ Mandriva Linux PowerPack.
Thank you.

It’s a great idea to work for the community. This attitude is higly appreciated.

I suggested other “great” distributions should follow this example
some users stated they would give Mandriva Spring a go:

Thanks Mandriva!
Outstanding news! One of the biggest gaps in Mandriva 2009 with KDE4 is the lack of K3B. It is a fine, fine tool, one of the best on any platform. Getting it back will be a happy thing, indeed.
Thank you once more Mandriva!!!
It is nice that Mandriva, what has be a contributor for K3b before too, is continuing the support for it by porting it for KDE4.
As we know the K3b went littlebit background when main developed started to work with nepomuk, it is now nice to know it is back on the rail again.
Best CD/DVD burning application for personal computers, (so not only for PC, but Mac’s too!) and it is great even for AudioCD and Movie DVD ripping.
Someone mentioned the Inkscape, what I use every day. Only thing what I hope is that they would apply the patch for it so the object alpha would not get forced to 254 but would be 255 without editing XML by hand. Otherwise it is very dificult to use for graphics because the amount of extra editing afterwards.
This is good news indeed, many thanks mandriva for adding your support to this.
Thank you very, very much Mandriva!
thank you. k3b is a tool that always i use everyday. its good news if mandriva spring 2009.1 and kde4 will bring it.

Great idea from mandriva, other distos should follow this.
I’ve been mdk/mdv user since 9.0 till 2009.0, it’s actually the first linux for me.
kde was my desktop till 2005LE, which now has been replaced by gnome and e17.
I’ll try the kde again in 2009.1
cheers
Great!
IMO k3b need new features like visual tools to build vcd, dvd and photo-cd. Like 2mandvd: http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php/2ManDVD?content=99450
Wowwww, this is a really fantastic news!
Thanks for your efforts!
Regards,
Renato
Very very very good news! =D
I`m a K3B fan! =D

Thank you very much. Without this i would stay with 2008.1 for another period – although that is probably the best version of Linux i have ever used.

Nice !
Stay Quanta in KDE3, that I use intensively as my main professional tool, as webdev. I tried on a spare PC to move on 2009spring, but Quanta was not able to work as espected on sftp connexions. I don’t know if it was the X enviro (LXDE), but I sincerely think that kio was completely lost.
Quanta doesn’t seem to have any dev on it, so no migration planed to KDE4.
So I will stay in the 2009.0 version of Mandriva, in KDE3.5
